On the topic of the war in Afghanistan, and Afghan refugees
Resolution text
Resolved, That the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, meeting in Phoenix, AZ, October 17-20, extends its deepest care and concern for the violence that has occurred in Afghanistan for the past 20 years and recognizes the suffering, hardship, and grief endured by the Afghan people; and be it Further;
Resolved, that the church laments the chaos and harm caused by the return to power of the Taliban following the August 2021 US withdrawal from Afghanistan, understanding the dire implications for many activists, journalists, female professionals, and human rights defenders who are now facing retaliation; and be it further
Resolved, That the Church advocate, through the Office of Government Relations, for the continued evacuation of Afghans that are at risk still within the country, as well any Afghan refugees displaced to a third country during this conflict; and be it Further;
Resolved, That Executive Council commend the ongoing work of Episcopal Migration Ministries and the many parishes, communities, and individuals, responding to this crisis and urge the Church to support robust resettlement of Afghans, especially ensuring that those who arrived on humanitarian parole are able to reside legally in the United States and benefit from services.
